Summer Camp Volunteers act as assistant instructors for our summer camps and receive training in our unique approach to mentoring youth in nature, which focuses on curiosity, play and asking questions as much or more than a delivery of facts. You can learn more about this approach by exploring Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature, available from our web store.
At Survival Skills Day Camp, kids learn skills to survive and thrive in the wilderness using techniques that have been used throughout all of human history.
Your child will learn real-life survival skills, in fun and exciting ways! They’ll learn to make fire with and without matches, and how to tend a fire safely. We’ll teach knife safety, how to identify and harvest wild edible plants, and delicious campfire cooking techniques. Campers will build shelters and create fun and practical items like baskets, tools, or rope.
Campers will enjoy:
- Making fire with matches and ferro rods
- Bushcraft projects (e.g. spoons, baskets, cordage)
- Identifying and harvesting wild edible plants
- Knife safety and fun carving projects
- Building and finding natural shelters
- Learning practical ways to stay safe and survive if they are ever lost in the woods
